Who We Are!
Burroughs Nature Club was founded in 1916 and named after John Burroughs (1837-1921), the famous Hudson River Valley author whose popular books inspired many a turn-of-the-century naturalist. The Burroughs Nature Club of Willoughby was founded by outstanding Cleveland area men (scientists, scholars, naturalists and photographers) who shared a common love of hiking, wildlife watching and other investigations of the natural world. They also enjoyed the camaraderie of a good hike together in the “wilds’ of Lake County. The Burroughs Nature Club remains one of the oldest such nature clubs in the nation. Burroughs Club also participates in the annual Christmas Bird Count for the Willoughby region. In May, the traditional “Pallister May Hike” climaxes our year. Our Mascot!
The fledgling Great Horned Owl on our program cover has achieved “mascot status” for our organization. The photo was taken by C. M. Shipman, an early member and longtime President of Burroughs Nature Club. This wide eyed little owl is perhaps a symbol for the ongoing curiosity of our members and our fondness for the intrigues of the natural world. 100th Year!
We celebrated our 100th year in 2016! Our Burroughs Nature Club continues to extend the invitation to membership to all who share a common interest in the study and enjoyment of nature and conservation of natural resources. |
